When someone is sharing their screen with you in AnyMeeting you can control the appearance of the shared image by hovering the cursor over the image. A toolbar appears, as shown below. The magnifying glass toggles between “Actual Size” and “Fit to Screen”; usually Actual Size is a good fit. The other tool toggles between “Maximized” and “Minimized.” Often, Maximized is your best bet as other combinations will truncate the bottom of the image or render it too small to be useful.
Sometimes you receive a file that gives you pause. It might be from a website you don’t fully trust, or it has appeared mysteriously in your inbox. What ever the case, you’d like to make sure it’s on the up-and-up. While it’s pretty tough to get 100% certainty, analyzing a suspect file with VirusTotal can get you pretty close. VirusTotal is a website that inspects a link or file you give it. It scans the file with about 40 different antivirus solutions and shows you the results. If you find yourself scanning links and files frequently they offer a desktop application (Windows only) and browser plugin (Firefox) that can add scanning with VirusTotal as an option to your right-click menu.
If you haven’t been upgraded to Windows 7 and Office 2010, chances are you soon will. While I think the new interface office uses is an improvement it can certainly take some getting used to. One thing you can use to ease the transition: a set of guides from Microsoft where you can enter a command on the Office 2003 interface and see how to do that same command in Office 2010. These guides are available online as a webapp or on your desktop in a folder called “Help with Office 2010”.
In a previous post I mentioned that I use Mozilla Firefox as my main browser. There are a few reasons here and there but if I had to name one thing that keeps me using Firefox it would be: Firefox addons. Lifehacker recently pointed me to an excellent free service: join.me. The website allows you to quickly create a virtual meeting by sharing your desktop. All you have to do is point your browser at http://join.me. click “Share”, and then click OK or Run. A small program runs and gives you a link to share. (more…)
Nowadays if you don’t have a Twitter account, a Facebook page, and a blog, your staff group might be considered behind the times. Of course, the downside of all these fancy communications channels is that keeping them updated with relevant info gets to be a full-time job.
Fortunately you can update them all at once with ping.fm. You’ll need to head over to their site and setup a free account. Ever sit down at a coworker’s computer (or a loaner) only to find they don’t have your favorite image editing software installed? Rather than downloading and installing something like The Gimp or Paint.NET you can just point a web browser at Phoenix. Phoenix lets you upload photos to edit online or create new photos. It’s powerful (support for essentials like layers) and it’s easy to use. They even have tutorials to get you started. Best of all its free, there is no install time and it works anywhere you have a web browser and an internet connection.
