Just a quick note that I won’t be posting here any longer. If you are a UUA employee and would still like to get our ramblings and tech tips I’d recommend checking out the Helpdesk Group in the UUA Mango instance.

You may not realize that the UUA hosts dozens of email mailing lists about UU-related topics, as well as for UU organizations. Thousands of people participate in these lists to share information about UUism and running UU congregations. Please consider subscribing – there’s a lot to learn! These lists can also be invaluable for getting the word out about UUA programs. The UUA encourages staff to participate in discussions to contribute facts and point people at UUA resources. Staff should avoid offering personal opinions on topics where it might be construed as “the UUA’s position.”
To subscribe, go to the lists.uua.org Mailing Lists page, click the list name, and fill out the subscription form.

IT will be operating normally until the start to the Thanksgiving break. After 2 PM on Wednesday the 23rd if you have an urgent help request please call 617-948-6109 and leave a message. ITS staffers will be notified as soon as you finish recording your message that someone has an issue and we’ll do our best to help out in a timely manner. As usual for non-urgent issues you can send email to helpdesk_@_uua.org. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.
We are done installing a new mail server (Exchange 2010, for those geeks among you). The next step is to move all our mailboxes from the old server to the new server. We’ve moved the first 100 or so, and will be moving about 50 each night until we are done. You’ll get an email the day before we plan to move yours. Read on for details.
iTunes is a problem for IT folks. I guesstimate that iTunes will cost ITS about $3,000 in time when we migrate to Windows 7 later this year. Every time we replace a computer or re-install Windows on an existing computer, we backup and restore all your files. If you use iTunes, you have an iTunes Library folder containing all your music, and we have to move it along with the rest of your files. (Well, we don’t have to, but we are nice enough to do so.) If you have hundreds or thousands of songs or videos, the iTunes Library folder is large, and can take half an hour to back up and restore.
The first time I needed to burn a DVD or CD I remember it took me an hour or so of searching out and downloading and testing software before I discovered a method I liked. Hopefully this post can save you a bit of that time. (more…)
